Apollo GNC Hardware Overview

This presentation systematically documents the hardware platform on which Hamilton’s software ran. Produced as part of NASA’s Apollo Mission Familiarization project (see Learning from the Past), it provides a visual reference to every major component of the Apollo guidance, navigation, and control system across both the Command/Service Module and the Lunar Module.

The presentation explicitly notes that the Command Module Computer (CMC) and Lunar Guidance Computer (LGC) were “identical hardware, different software (Colossus for CSM, Luminary for LM).” Colossus and Luminary are the programs Hamilton’s team at MIT developed. Understanding the hardware interfaces documented here — the DSKY, the Coupling Data Units, the sensor inputs, the engine controls — is prerequisite to understanding why Hamilton’s software architecture had to be so carefully designed.

The presentation opens with the three core functions of any guidance, navigation, and control system:

  • Navigation: “Where am I?” — sensor measurements produce a state vector (position and velocity)
  • Guidance: “Where am I going?” — the state vector yields required delta-V and attitude commands
  • Control: “How do I get there?” — delta-V and attitude commands drive effectors (thrusters, engine gimbals)

Hamilton’s software implemented all three functions. The navigation routines processed raw sensor data from the IMU, optics, and radar. The guidance routines computed the maneuvers needed to achieve mission objectives. The control routines translated those commands into thruster firings and engine gimbal movements.

The CSM GNC system had two main components:

Primary Guidance, Navigation, and Control System (PGNCS)

The PGNCS handled all guidance and navigation plus primary control. Its hardware included:

  • Computer Subsystem (CSS): The AGC and its DSKY display/keyboard interface
  • Inertial Subsystem (ISS): The IMU (a three-gimbal platform with Inertial Reference Integrating Gyros and Pulse Integrating Pendulous Accelerometers), the Navigation Base, Coupling Data Units, Power Servo Assembly, and Pulse Torque Assembly
  • Optical Subsystem (OSS): Sextant and Scanning Telescope for celestial navigation

The SCS served as backup control. It provided crew displays, manual controls, and the interface between PGNCS and the propulsion system. An important design note: “Almost no redundancy in CSM guidance and navigation (mostly in optics subsystem).” The CSM relied on Mission Control as its backup guidance source — the ground could compute and uplink trajectory corrections if the onboard system failed.

The LM GNC system had three components and significantly more redundancy than the CSM, reflecting the higher stakes of lunar surface operations:

Primary Guidance and Navigation Section (PGNS)

The primary system, with hardware similar to the CSM’s PGNCS. In addition to the common components (AGC, IMU, DSKY), the LM carried:

  • Alignment Optical Telescope (AOT): A simpler optical instrument than the CSM’s sextant, with six fixed detent positions for lunar surface star sightings
  • Landing Radar: Provided altitude and velocity data during descent
  • Rendezvous Radar: Tracked the CSM during rendezvous operations

A completely independent backup guidance system for abort scenarios, built by TRW rather than MIT:

  • Abort Electronics Assembly (AEA): A separate computer with its own processor and memory
  • Data Entry and Display Assembly (DEDA): A simpler interface than the DSKY
  • Abort Sensor Assembly (ASA): A strapdown (strap-down) inertial navigation unit, independent of the PGNS IMU

This asymmetry directly shaped Hamilton’s software requirements. The LM software had to handle transitions to the AGS during abort scenarios — a capability with no analog on the CSM side.

The CES provided backup control for PGNS, all control for AGS, crew displays, and the propulsion interface. Its components included attitude controllers, thrust/translation controllers, rate gyros, and the descent engine control assembly.

The Coupling Data Unit: Bridge Between Computer and Sensors

The Coupling Data Unit (CDU) served as a 5-channel analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converter between the AGC and its sensors. It was the data bridge that Hamilton’s software relied on for all sensor input and actuator output. Every navigation measurement and every control command passed through the CDU’s conversion process.

This hardware abstraction — a clean boundary between the digital world of the AGC and the analog world of sensors and actuators — is an early example of what modern embedded systems call a Hardware Abstraction Layer. The CDU’s conversion characteristics (resolution, latency, noise) were constraints that Hamilton’s navigation algorithms had to account for.

The presentation explicitly warns that “terminology not always consistent between various organizations (Program Office, Flight Ops, North American, Grumman, MIT, TRW)” and uses prime contractor terminology (North American for CSM, Grumman for LM). This inconsistency is not merely an editorial inconvenience — it was a source of real engineering risk. Hamilton’s later work on the Universal Systems Language was partly motivated by the need for unambiguous system description that could prevent the confusion caused by inconsistent terminology across organizational boundaries.

Every sensor input and control output in Hamilton’s software corresponds to a piece of hardware documented in this presentation:

  • The navigation routines in Colossus and Luminary processed data from the IMU, optics, Landing Radar, and Rendezvous Radar described here
  • The guidance equations computed commands for the engine gimbals and RCS thrusters shown in the control system diagrams
  • The DSKY interface routines (the “Pinball Game” code) managed the display and keyboard hardware detailed in the Computer Subsystem slides
  • The mode management code had to handle transitions between all the control modes documented here — PGNCS primary, SCS backup, AGS abort, and various manual override configurations

When Hamilton’s priority-based executive had to shed lower-priority tasks during the 1202/1201 alarms, the backup systems documented here (SCS for CSM, AGS for LM) were the fallback options. Hamilton’s software had to be aware of these backup paths and manage the transitions between them.

Hardware constraints drive software architecture. The AGC’s limited resources (fixed-point arithmetic, 36K words of fixed memory, 2K words of erasable memory) meant that every computation had to be carefully budgeted. Modern radiation-hardened processors for space applications face analogous constraints — they are typically several generations behind commercial processors in capability.

Asymmetric redundancy. The deliberate asymmetry between CSM redundancy (minimal, with ground backup) and LM redundancy (full abort guidance system) is a practical compromise. Not every subsystem needs the same level of backup. Modern systems can learn from this targeted approach to redundancy allocation.

Sensor abstraction. The CDU’s role as a clean interface between the digital computer and analog sensors is an early and successful example of hardware abstraction. Modern spacecraft software benefits from similar clean boundaries between sensor hardware and processing software.
